Ooty
Queen of the Blue Mountains
Overview
Ooty, officially known as Udhagamandalam, reigns as the Queen of the Nilgiri Hills, a title she has held for over two centuries since being discovered by the British as the perfect summer retreat. Nestled at 2,240 meters above sea level, Ooty enchants visitors with its rolling green hills blanketed by tea gardens, eucalyptus-scented air, and the charming colonial architecture that whispers tales of a bygone era. The UNESCO World Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway, with its iconic blue and cream toy train, chugs through 16 tunnels and across 250 bridges, offering one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. The Government Botanical Garden, spanning 22 hectares, houses over 650 species of plants and trees, including a 20-million-year-old fossilized tree trunk. Ooty Lake, created in 1824, is the centerpiece of the town where families gather for boating amid groves of eucalyptus and pine. The Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 meters, provides a panoramic 360-degree view that stretches across three states on clear days. The town is also famous for its aromatic eucalyptus oil, homemade chocolates, and the annual flower show that transforms the gardens into a riot of colors. Whether riding the heritage train through misty mountains, walking through acres of tea estates, or watching the sun set behind the blue hills, Ooty offers an experience that is both nostalgic and timeless.
